Listen, I have every Prince album that has come out. Notice I said, “Album”. That lets you know I am old school. I have been into Prince’s music since the late 70’s. Yes, 70’s! I WASN’T happy with RnR Affair because I don’t hear his passion. I think we have to be honest. There is a difference between bashing Prince for being Prince and loving his music and understanding that he isn’t going to always hit it out of the ball park with song. Shoot, I have said it before, I can’t stand “Horny Toad”, but I digress. Anyhoo, Prince has to get out of the box. He has to get mean and lean again. I know that he thinks he is getting mean and lean when he changes his band members, but this is something he has to find within himself to change HIS music. I love his natural new look, but he has to find his passion again. I haven’t been hearing passion in some of his newer music. Prince needs to step away from Larry for awhile and truly decide and map out a new direction for his music.

God, I remember when I would almost lose my mind when a new Prince joint came out…sorry to say, I am growing just as cold as Prince has about his music. Hey, we are maturing, however, we are still kids at heart and Prince needs to set a new standard in his music and still keep his integrity.

Normally I feel any criticism of Prince to be unwarranted. Normally it comes from people that don’t like or understand his music. On this board I can’t help but agree with what you’re saying though. In fact, I find that many of you are trying to be respectful of Prince and his music while stating some obvious insights. I know I’m not his biggest fan, although I have many of his albums (all his released albums and a few underground and website ones). I have been impacted by him as an artist for a huge part of my adult life. But lately, and I won’t give a cut off date, I feel he’s just treading water. More image or history than relevance today. His body of work cannot be touched. And he has more musical talent in one hand than many artists have in their whole body. Unfortunately he doesn’t produce the music he once did. He had a tremendous run. It may be over.

Richard wrote…”Too bad these kids don’t know what real music is…you sit in front of Prince at a concert and listen to him play his music…you’ll learn what musicology 101 is all about instead of the crap they play these days on the radio!”

All this negativity about the “crap” they play on the radio is just wrong. There’s plenty of great music on the radio these days. Much better than the lame “Rock and Roll Love Affair” by Prince. In concert, Prince is the master. Nowadays in the studio however, it’s a different story. He sounds watered down, safe, tame, boring.

And, the very next time I hear Prince yell out in concert, “This is real music by real musicians”, I’m gonna walk out. Quit preaching to the choir, Prince. We know you guys are REAL musicians and that you’re playing REAL music, although I think your choice in playing so many God forsaken covers is the absolute wrong move for you to make. People come to hear YOUR music, not watered down, half-assed carbon copies of other people’s songs. I doubt very seriously that if Sly Stone got on stage to do a concert he would EVER do a song of yours. He’s there to play HIS music and God bless him for that!!!

And, when it comes to your egotistical mantra, “This is REAL music by REAL musicians”, I’ve got some news for you. You and your band ain’t the only ones doing REAL music with REAL musicians. If you go to even a Rihanna, Pink or Shakira concert, they all have full bands of REAL musicians playing REAL music and doing it very, very well. So, take your “REAL music by REAL musicians” and get your tush in the studio and make REAL music with them instead of playing all the instruments yourself, creating mediocre songs. Not cool, brother.

Like many of his post WB songs (and albums) I heard it once. Then I may like it or find something redeeming in it, but then, I dont care to listen to it again. Or I may think its the worst thing, like many a song on 3121 where I literally declare that I NEVER want to hear it again.

Why? Its not that I’m being a jerk or that I have no clue about “The Truth”, but rather, I’ve been spoiled by Prince. The Warner Bros years Prince. What I call “Classic Prince”.

So, yeah, I can only speak for myself, but, yes, I can play oh say, Housequake or Good Love then Jump to Still Would Stand All Time and then, Elephants, Solo… Mountains, How Come U… heck, even Private Joy and just be lifted up and think, MAN, Prince was the dude! What happened?

Could it be that being that he’s basically a Christian/JW rock star now, I’m talking like in the same vein as Christian Rock music, could it be that its all clogged up with ability to expand creatively. I’ve had a sense he’s been limited, very limited, his mind occupied by JW limits. Rave had HINTS that he had no limits, a freedom, just a few hints of that fading away.

The musicians he hires now too… they seem capable, talented, but not challenging. A drummer like Blackwell inspired him on a few tracks on Rainbow, which is what you want, someone to inspire you but with this new song, the beat is steady, it sounds like every other song Prince has done since what, Musicology?

They seem still hired rather than collaborators with unique, interesting, challenging musical backgrounds and experiences. I can name a few musicians that took Prince into fantastic directions with marvelous results, but I know the FAM in all of ya’lls would just attack me.

Yes, I am proud to say I LIVE IN THE PAST. Because when I put on that Livesexy DVDR and I SEE and FEEL HEAR Prince in that, I’m floored, mesmerized, not only by him but his band… and thats the experience with almost all his “Classic Prince” work.

But alas, what can we do, we’re just an audience. A fan base that’s been tricked into following a once innovative, surprising recording artist, with the hope of releasing The Vault when he just said, he has no intention of releasing anything. Its just used as a mystique promotional image tool now for Prince… oooh, The Vaaault… thousands of unreleased songgsss…woowwww.

And see, just the mention of the mythical “VAULT” and you fam/fan, you know you want those gems released properly, oh but then you go “he’s in the everlasting now! He uhmmm… he keeps moving with new music… he… he… he don’t live in the past… he… “. Please.

It’s nice and smooth, something to swing with. Won’t be a chart breaker but who cares.

Sorry, didn’t mean to imply he should make another Purple Rain. In fact, that’s what’s always been so cool about him: his ability to reinvent himself. But that’s exactly what’s missing here: it’s kind of more of the same. The thin synths on this song sound just like “Take Me With U” for example. And the rest of the song is very reminiscent to me of some of the other weaker pop songs he’s written past his prime.

I just wish he would rely less on his well known studio tricks and just strip it down more and perhaps even just give it more of a live sound (because that’s _always_ so much better with him).

Mind you, the more I listen to this song, I’m sure it’ll grow on me anyway. And no matter what I think of what he’ll put out next, I’ll be the first in line to pay for it 🙂

Glad a lot of people already love the new song.

Now I’m going to listen to “Laydown” – his most recent studio work I actually really like… Haven’t heard it in a while, let’s see what I think now 🙂

Prince is now about sending a message, uplifting sounds with real music… not about making purple rain again… it usually takes me a few listens, but i liked it right away… the melody, everything. not everyone likes the same things… to say a song isn’t good is just an opinion, which I respect, but if some says it is good… they deserve the same respect. I love much of what he has done, and some songs I don’t care for… like “everybody loves me”…. hated that song. 🙂

Its unfair for peeps to constantly compare Prince’s past music to his new. That was a different time period. For an artist at Prince’s level to continue constantly non stop making music after over 30 years in the business its profound & astonishing. All of his music back then from the beginning up until now will always be a “Maste Piece ‘ to me. Give him his flowers now while he can still smell them…

A lot of talented artist are gone now that weren’t appreciated. Stop hating on this man..

Richard, you seem a little overly opinionated on those of us who feel rather underwhelmed by this new Prince song. I am definitely not stuck in the past, but this song just ain’t doing it for me man.

I agree with you that the man is unsurpassed when it comes to his live performances (just saw him back in May three times in Brisbane, one of them being the Eaton Hill’s after show), but I just think he could use some help from some fresh ears perhaps when it comes to his latest studio work.

Would love nothing more than for him to put some really impressive new studio album (actually, that’s a lie: what I would love more is for him to start releasing a lot of his live material), but I think that Prince himself might be a little stuck when it comes to writing new material.

That said, once he starts performing his new songs live, it always sounds so much better that I start liking the songs more. That always gives his songs these extra dimensions. Who knows, maybe it’ll happen with song too… Perhaps the answer is for him to record an album of new material live — after all, that’s what he largely did with the Purple Rain album.

It’s nice to hear some of the older style music. Those who find it boring are stuck in the past and still curse themselves… they couldn’t find a hit in this if it slapped them in the face. Too bad these kids don’t know what real music is… you sit in front of Prince at a concert and listen to him play his music… you’ll learn what musicology 101 is all about instead of the crap they play these days on the radio!

I enjoyed hearing the clearity in Prince’s voice. So popular singing boy/girl. Masks dance until dawn. Flash with a bad aditude. Not at all, only there is no use saying anything wise when everyone thinks you’re a fool. Even when the most foolish things you speak about are misunderstood. Sox puppets play with sox puppets of layers above mankind. The strings that are pullied against the will of the source code shall fall. No point dancing when no one can hear the music. You just look like the crazy one. My sufferings have passed awakening me moreover to something far more ugly in “THEM mans’ world”.

    Supersuckycalifragipoopy.

Time upon a once, this was uttered:

“…There was a boy named Camille
    Now this boy named Camille
    didn’t know how 2 feel.
    Sometimes he was lonely
    sometimes he was sad
    but most times
    he just took 4 granted
    all the nice things
    that he had.

Some people said they loved him
    but Camille said
    “Contempt!
    Winter, Spring,
    Summer, or Fall,
    love is no good
    unless it’s felt by all”

So, naive & terrifically in need
    Camille started looking for answers
    His paintbrush the questioner,
    his canvas the arena,
Camille set out to silence his critics.
“No longer daring” – his enemies laughed.
“No longer glam, his funk is half-assed…
    one leg is much shorter
than the other one is weak.
    His strokes are tepid,
    his colors are meek.”

So Camille found a new color.
    The color black:
    strongest hue of them all.
    He painted a picture
    called Le Grind —
    hittin’ so tall.
    And then Cindy C —
    THE vogue fantasy.
    Horns & vocals 2 die 4.
    Lollipops — in yours!

Stroke after stroke callin’ all others a joke.
    Superfunkycalifragisexi.”

LONG LIVE CAMILLE. Warner Brothers 4-Ever!

Frankly, it’s bland. It could be a lot worse (just listen to Top 40 radio for a while) but it should be better. I feel like a teacher with an A+ student who just handed in a B grade paper. We know you’ve still got it in you, Prince. Why are you holding back?

Very much agree that Prince is in dire need of some outside Producer help. Great suggestion, Myles Matisse, although I would recommend inner-circle producers like Jimmy Jam & Tery Lewis or Wendy & Lisa if you want to get a real fresh perspective.

Personally, I’d love Prince to work with someone like Dave Grohl (to give a random example).

Whether Prince or any of his other fans agree or not, what Prince really, really, really needs more than anything else in the world is an outside producer to bring in a fresh perspective and a new set of ears. There’s a slew of top notch producers Prince could collaborate with that wouldn’t take away but enhance his sound and talents that have always been there. By Prince doing it all himself, he’s limiting his song creations because of the lack of dimension that an outside force could help him find and build upon.

Some producer choices: Quincy Jones, Rick Rubin, Stuart Price, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Wendy & Lisa, Trevor Horn, Chris Thomas, Tony Visconti, Lenny Kravitz, Questlove.

Note to Sally E: I live in Hollywood and live a very rock and roll lifestyle. This NEW Prince jam is anything but Rock and Roll. More like geriatric central.
