09 Mar Guilty Plea In David Letterman Blackmail Case

Robert “Joe” Halderman, the former CBS News producer accused of trying to blackmail comedian David Letterman, agreed Tuesday to plead guilty to second-degree grand larceny in exchange for six months in jail, five years probation and 1,000 hours of community service. Formal sentencing is scheduled for May 4, 2010.

Halderman had threatened to expose Letterman’s affairs with Late Show staffers if the talk show host did not pay him $2 million to keep quiet. In his statement, Halderman detailed the timeline for the extortion plot, admitting “I knew throughout this time that I was not engaged in a legitimate business transaction with Mr. Letterman and that what I was doing was against New York law.”

In a statement, David Letterman thanked the district attorney of Manhattan, Cyrus R. Vance, Jr.; the former district attorney, Robert M. Morgenthau; the Special Prosecutions Bureau in the district attorney’s office and the New York City Police Department.
